Field Day

Every year, our elementary school does a spring field day. Kids get to spend the day outside competing in different fun events. Well, due to covid, field day was canceled...so we called some neighbors and friends and planned our own field day!
We all met at Terra Park in town (it's big enough for us to all distance)
Bubble relay was the first event, teams had to race from one bubble station to the next and blow a bubble in order to proceed to the next person in the relay!
Then it was tug of war! First we did boys on one side...
versus girls on the other!
Then it was kids...
versus moms!
This was the hula hoop relay, teams created a long chain and had to step through the hula hoop in order to pass it down!
Slide it down!
Last was a scavenger hunt to find items to then create a sculpture or art creation with the found items!
All in all, the kids (and parents) had a great field day. It was fun to get together and be outside for some competition!

Learning from home....covid

You may have heard, but this global pandemic has caused a few disruptions. One to hit our house was school transitioning to online learning...learning from home. Heather did an awesome job of keeping up with the material that school sent home plus she added in lots of outdoor learning and exploring! Here are some photos of our adventures from the spring of 2020!
Exploring gravity and what happens when you throw a rock into water
Learning ROCKS!
Exploring!
We met up with some friends to learn about ponds...too cool!
We did set up a daily schedule (on the chalk board in the background!) and Hillcrest Ct Elementary is in session. I transitioned to working from the basement and became the "principal's" office!
Outside learning
They went to lots of different parks, Heather made an effort to try out parks they hadn't been to before!
Group reading time
Trigg loved school at home, he is a reader and plowed through a ton of books!
Even reading up in a tree!
Creating with pom-poms
Reading!
Science experiments...vinegar and baking soda
Identifying shapes!
Garrett's teacher, Ms D, dropped off a kite for Garrett, so we learned about wind
Thumbs up while flying!
Our teachers were great adjusting to lots of changes, we dropped off flowers to let them know we appreciate them! Thanks Ms Kintz!
Thank you Ms D!
Trigg designed a Lego room
Downtown to explore art
...maybe climb on some art too
Pretending to be statues!
At the Capital
Rolling down the giant hill!
Park in Urbandale with giant chairs!
Even found a turtle

We made bird feeders from toilet paper rolls and a stick
Learned about trees and how fast they grow, you can measure around them and figure out about how old trees are
Finding cool sticks
Checking out the buffaloes (little windy)

We ended the year with making worm farms
Layers of habitat for the worms

and, G lost a tooth!
Over by the riverwalk, they found a giant bobber!
Checking out the sculpture park
Love it!
As spring turned to summer...the pools aren't open yet, so they headed up to Big Creek to play in the water and sand
Digging moats and building castles
Having fun!
End of the schools year, thanks Ms Kintz for a great (and unusual) year!
