Wild West Week

Heather does an awesome job with our summer break. Each week has a different "theme" and that theme helps them decide what sort of activities they do through the week. It also influences what books they get from the library! Some themes we have had are "water week", "outdoors/camping week", "fishing week (of course)" and this year we had "Wild West Week".
Heather got in touch with her Uncle Phil, who is a real life cowboy and lives in Indianola! He had a free afternoon, so we headed down there to ride some horses! He has 8 or 9 horses on his farm and the kids loved running around the farm and checking out the horses!
Then he brought 2 of them into the stable, where he has a large barn/arena for riding! He saddled up D.J. and Disco and we got to pretend to be cowboys and cowgirls for the afternoon! Trigg was up first!
Phil took the reign's and lead them around the barn!
Phil taught Trigg how to "talk" to your horse, say "Whoooaa" to stop and make a clicking sound to go!
Trigg got the hang of it and had a ton of fun!
The cowgirls were next! Heather and Blythe loved riding the horse! Blythe was all smiles the whole time!
Garrett and I took a spin around the barn!
We got the hang of it and Phil handed over the reign's, so we were flying solo!
I wore my best cowboy shirt to at least look the part!
Trigg wanted to go again and see if he could ride on his own...we started with me walking him around the barn...
and then he took the reigns!
Heather and Garrett on the inside and Trigg riding Disco all by himself!
Proud of this kid and his courage!
Garrett and I took one more turn around the barn!
Big thanks to Phil for hosting us for the afternoon, being on his farm made me want a bigger yard with some room for kids to run and play! The kids loved climbing the hay bales, checking out the tractors and of course, the horses! We loved the horses!
Next up in our Wild West Week...making cactus! We used cucumbers and tooth picks!
 The cactus's turned out great!
 The kids loved making these...
 ...and they turned out great!
Last activity was lassoing! I turned a saw horse into a horse with the help of a fun noodle and some construction paper, then we tied some rope to a hola-hoop and we had a rootin-tootin' good time! Blythe was a natural and caught the "horse" several times!
G harnessed his inner cowboy to wrangle the wild stallion!
Trigg, showing his skills, was able to tame the wild west!
Every Monday, we head to the library to get books for the week. Heather hops on their website and reserves books that go along with the weeks theme. Here are a couple that we had this week!
For our cactus building...Nobody Hugs a Cactus!
One of our favorites, Pirates vs. Cowboys!

This one was my favorite for the week, we read it several times!

We had a great Wild West Week, the kids loved it and I'm pretty sure it will be a theme again next year! Giddy up!

Baseball

This year we dipped our toes into youth sports! Trigg wanted to play baseball, we contacted the Johnston Little League and luckily there was 1 spot open on the Giants! Count him in! At age 7, they play coached pitched baseball. We don't counts outs or runs, each team goes through their lineup in batting and we play 3 innings! The first game we had a tee, but never used it, so it didn't reappear after the first game!
Number 6 had fun all season and was hitting the ball pretty well!
 Trigg played all positions
and all the kids got better at fielding!

Even in colder weather, we played baseball!

We had 15 games through the season
 Go Giants!

Little League is pretty much the same as I remember when I played baseball except for one thing...pictures! I recall my little league picture being me, in my team jersey, with my glove and sitting with one knee on the grass. Here are a few of Trigg's pictures. The picture game has stepped up a ton since my days of baseball!

Play ball!

MN Fishing Trip

Every summer, the boys and I pack up the Jeep with our fishing rods and head north for a week of fishing! For the last 4 years, we have been heading to a great resort, Camp Liberty, just outside of Nevis, MN. The boys and I go with my parents, my grandpa, and my sister and her family, so there are 4 generations fishing! This year, my mom's two sisters came with some of their family, so there was lots of cousins to play with!
The drive is about a 7 hour drive, so we start in the morning and get there mid-afternoon. Both boys were super excited for the trip and woke up at 6am! Well, Grandma (my mom) rides with us and wasn't getting to our house till 9am...so we got the Jeep packed and waited patiently! Both boys were a little tired once we finally hit the road...time for a quick power nap!
 for both Garrett and Trigg.
Our first pit stop was Cabela's in Owatonna, MN to get some fishing supplies! Then we hit "play" on the dvd player!
We got to the 8th Crow Wing Lake around 4:30 and quickly got unpacked to help Grandpa (my dad) get the boat in the water!
After a little supper, we got in some evening fishing!
And tested out the lake water and a little bike riding...thumbs up!
Sunday morning was raining, so the boys were slow to get up!
But the fish were biting! Grandpa caught a good crappie!
We caught a few more that day, then headed to "Surgery" That the sign on the fish house!
We cleaned the fish...Trigg thought it was a little too smelly in there!
Then we had a game of toss
 And some kayaking!
The sun came out in the afternoon, so we did some more fishing!
Garrett caught a bunch of bluegill!
One good thing about a dirt road is that you can easily make a race track to zoom hot wheels!
G gave the track two thumbs up!
Monday morning was gorgeous as the sun came up!
My dad and I went out early to do some bass fishing around the docks!
I gave my dad my phone to snap a picture and ended up with a selfie of him!
Caught a few more nice bass, around 2 pounds.
Heather sends a small present for the boys to open each morning, they were both pumped about their glider airplanes!
 More fishing!
The boys took out the paddle boat, Trigg became pretty good and handling this paddle boat through the week!
Trigg and I took out the canoe for an adventure, G choose to stay in the cabin for a little rest time.
We made it down the Crow Wing river!
Tuesday morning, caught a few more bass! This one was a 3 pounder!
This is what we call a "Double"! That's when 2 people in the boat catch a fish at the same time!
Nevis is home to the World's Largest Tiger Muskie!
 More early morning bass
...and another
...and another, these were all about 3 pounds. I was using a Yum Craw Papi in Green Pumpkin on a Texas Rig, it was doing the trick this year!
Wednesday, Grandpa took our nieces out on his boat, so the boys and I grabbed the pontoon and headed out on the lake!
 Plenty to see!
We caught some fish and then headed back to the dock, Trigg drove half the way...
and Garrett drove the other half!
Then more playing on the beach!
G thought it was too cold for the water, so we sat in the sun and warmed up!
They have this great blue mat anchored in the bay...Trigg taking a break out on the mat!
More race cars in the dirt!
Thursday morning, we headed out early for more bass, my dad picked up a few green pumpkin craw's and he caught a nice bass!
Trigg really wanted to join us for early morning bass fishing. So, I woke him up about 5:45am and he was ready to go! The temp was only 38 degrees, so I bundled him up, long sleeve, sweatshirt, jacket and life jacket. We also have these neck buffs that he can pull over his face for a little more warmth! The fog was thick this morning but the fish were still biting!
Here is the fog rolling across the lake!
Trigg fished for about 30 minutes and then snuggled in the front seat, here we are fishing in the fog...
about 45 minutes later, the fog finally burned off!
...and Trigg fell asleep! I just let him sleep in the front seat and we fished around the docks along the shoreline.
Caught this little bass...Trigg still sleeping
 Caught this bigger bass...still sleeping!
He did wake up and fished a little more with us before we headed in for breakfast!
Noah lives on the resort, he has a gator like his dad and gets paid a penny per stick he picks up! The boys quickly made friends with Noah and his green Gator!
They had a project through the week of digging a trench at the beach!
Thursday was a sand castle competition at the beach, the boys got to work!
I also jumped into the competition and made a large mouth bass out of sand and named him "The Whopper!"
 Working hard of their creation
I'm told they made a loon
After the competition, I let the boys stomp on my sand fish while enjoying some feezey's
Garrett and Sawyer built a sweet tower out of giant jinga blocks, they named it Skyscraper Sawett.
Thursday afternoon we tried our hands at tie-dye. Twist up the t-shirt and squirt on some dye!
All the cousins hard at work!
Trigg ready to color his shirt!
 The dudes
Thursday evening was our last chance to fish, Grandpa tested out his motor and we flew across the lake at 25 miles per hour, all G could do was giggle in the front seat! 2 thumbs up!
We were fishing for crappie with my pole bent over...to my surprise, I caught this 3.5 pound walleye!
 All the kiddos!
We left Friday morning (a day early) to get back home for Trigg's last baseball game of the season. We had a great week of fishing at the lake, lots of fun with family and the peacefulness of a week on the water. Thanks to Kristin & Todd at Camp Liberty, they have a great resort and we would recommend it to anyone! Thanks as well to YUM baits and their Craw Papi in green pumpkin! The boys and I are already talking about next year's fishing trip!
