Wild West Week

Heather does an awesome job with our summer break. Each week has a different "theme" and that theme helps them decide what sort of activities they do through the week. It also influences what books they get from the library! Some themes we have had are "water week", "outdoors/camping week", "fishing week (of course)" and this year we had "Wild West Week".
Heather got in touch with her Uncle Phil, who is a real life cowboy and lives in Indianola! He had a free afternoon, so we headed down there to ride some horses! He has 8 or 9 horses on his farm and the kids loved running around the farm and checking out the horses!
Then he brought 2 of them into the stable, where he has a large barn/arena for riding! He saddled up D.J. and Disco and we got to pretend to be cowboys and cowgirls for the afternoon! Trigg was up first!
Phil took the reign's and lead them around the barn!
Phil taught Trigg how to "talk" to your horse, say "Whoooaa" to stop and make a clicking sound to go!
Trigg got the hang of it and had a ton of fun!
The cowgirls were next! Heather and Blythe loved riding the horse! Blythe was all smiles the whole time!
Garrett and I took a spin around the barn!
We got the hang of it and Phil handed over the reign's, so we were flying solo!
I wore my best cowboy shirt to at least look the part!
Trigg wanted to go again and see if he could ride on his own...we started with me walking him around the barn...
and then he took the reigns!
Heather and Garrett on the inside and Trigg riding Disco all by himself!
Proud of this kid and his courage!
Garrett and I took one more turn around the barn!
Big thanks to Phil for hosting us for the afternoon, being on his farm made me want a bigger yard with some room for kids to run and play! The kids loved climbing the hay bales, checking out the tractors and of course, the horses! We loved the horses!
Next up in our Wild West Week...making cactus! We used cucumbers and tooth picks!
 The cactus's turned out great!
 The kids loved making these...
 ...and they turned out great!
Last activity was lassoing! I turned a saw horse into a horse with the help of a fun noodle and some construction paper, then we tied some rope to a hola-hoop and we had a rootin-tootin' good time! Blythe was a natural and caught the "horse" several times!
G harnessed his inner cowboy to wrangle the wild stallion!
Trigg, showing his skills, was able to tame the wild west!
Every Monday, we head to the library to get books for the week. Heather hops on their website and reserves books that go along with the weeks theme. Here are a couple that we had this week!
For our cactus building...Nobody Hugs a Cactus!
One of our favorites, Pirates vs. Cowboys!

This one was my favorite for the week, we read it several times!

We had a great Wild West Week, the kids loved it and I'm pretty sure it will be a theme again next year! Giddy up!
